Sir Francis succeeds Lord Cherwell, one of Sir Winston Churchill’s closest wartime advisers. Lord Cherwell paid tribute to Sir Francis as “universally recognized as the worlds foremost worker in the field of low temperature physics.” Sir Francis has been professor of thermodynamics at Oxford and consultant to the British Atonic Energy Commission.
