Sir Frederick Cowen, the famous composer, enters on his 80th. year to-morrow. He was born in Kingston, in Jamaica, on January 29th., 1852, and was brought by his parents to England at the age of four. When he was eight he had composed the music of an operetta entitled “Garibaldi”. He made his first public appearance at the age of 11, and the following year Trebelli, Joachim and Santley took part in a concert which he gave. Besides his operas, cantatas and oratories, Sir Frederick has composed over 200 songs.
Great musicians like Sir Edward Elgar, Mr. Edward German, and Sir Landon Ronald have paid tribute to Sir Frederick as their teacher and their greatest influence in music. Sir Landon Ronald, like Sir Frederick himself a Jew, once declared that he had known and admired Sir Frederick since he was a little boy.
