Sir Frederick Cowen, the famous composer, completed his 80th, birthday to-day. He was born in Kingston, in Jamaica, on January 29th., 1852, and was brought by his parents to England at the age of four. He composed his first opera when he was 8, and made his first public appearance at the age of 11. Besides his operas and oratorios, Sir Frederick has composed over 200 songs. Great musicians like Sir Edward Elgar, Mr. Edward German, and Sir Landon Ronald have paid tribute to Sir Frederick as their teacher and their greatest influence in music.
Sir Frederick retains close association with the Jewish Community, and last year he delivered a lecture on music at the West London Synagogue.
