Sir Josiah Simon, chairman of the judicial committee that framed the Australian constitution, today declared that Sir Isaac Isaacs is ineligible for the governor-generalship because a justice of the high court is not permitted to hold any other office. Sir Isaac is chief justice of the Australian supreme court.
Sir Josiah’s revelation has caused tremendous interest in legal circles here where it is now recalled that Sir Isaac, when a member of the Australian Parliament, had proposed a law to prevent a judge of the supreme court from serving even as acting governor-general.
