Sir Jules Thorn, an Austrian Jewish immigrant who built up Thorn Electrical Industries, one of Britain’s most successful, businesses, died here last Friday at the age of 82. Sir Jules was knighted in 1964 and was actively concerned with his vast electrical empire until four years ago when he retired and became its president. Born in Vienna in 1899, Thorn settled in Britain in 1925 and began his career by importing electric bulbs and radio valves. He bought his first factory in 1933.
