— Chief of Staff Gen. Raphael Eytan assured Israelis that the military situation has eased on the northern borders where concern had been expressed in recent weeks over Syrian troop movements in Lebanon. But, in an article to be published in the Passover eve edition of Moariv tomorrow, Eytan cautioned that the situation could change rapidly, although he did not foresee trouble in the immediate future.
The tension was caused by the re-deployment of the Syrian peace-keeping forces in Lebanon. It was feared that Palestinian elements would take over positions evacuated by Syrian troops. Israeli forces were placed on alert. According to Eytan, later evaluations indicated that the situation was less threatening than originally perceived.
