Dr. Abraham Cohen, retiring president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, condemned last night the attitude of some Jewish organization in urging the Jewish population to remain in North Africa and fight for its rights.
Addressing the Board on a report describing the situation in North Africa as “perilous,” Dr. Cohen warned that the Jews in North Africa were living in a storm center. Experience had shown, he commented, that in such circumstances, Jews were the victims of disorder. He said that it was easy, from the safe distance of London and New York, to give advice to people who were living on the slopes of a volcano that might erupt at any time.
Barnett Janner, a member of the British Parliament, took office last night as president of the Board, succeeding Dr. Cohen who retired after six years in the presidency.
Before formally laying down office, Dr. Cohen presided at the opening of the Brodetsky Library established at Hillel House for the use of Jewish students in London. The library is a memorial to the late Prof. Selig Brodetsky, mathematician, Zionist leader and former Board president.
