Henry Morgenthau, former American ambassador to Turkey, now visiting Greece, is being overwhelmed with attentions and honors. While accompanying Premier Venizoles through Macedonia and Thrace he has been made an honorary citizen of Salonica and of five other towns while his name has been given to a street in Salonica. The Greeks are paying him homage in gratitude for his services to the pro-Hellenic cause, particularly for his aid to the Greek war refugees.
After visiting the poor Jewish quarter in Salonica Mr. Morgenthau promised the Jewish community that he would endeavor to obtain a long term loan in the United States for the Jewish community here to be used for reconstruction and the building of suitable houses. He also attended a reception given him by the local B’nai B’rith lodge where he pointed out that he has been a member of the order for 52 years and feels proud of his Jewishness.
