Six members of a family were killed and four survived in one of Israel’s worst road accidents yesterday. The victims were Shimon Angel, 51; his 80-year-old mother, Hanem; and his four children–Abraham, 8. Esther, 6, Naomi. 4 and Chaim four months.
The accident occurred on the Lod-Tel Aviv highway when Angel’s pick-up truck skidded into the opposite lane, overturned and was hit successively by several cars coming from the opposite direction. His wife, Alegra, 48, and three other children, Meir. 11, Hanna, 10. and Varda, 3. were seriously injured but are expected to recover. All have been hospitalized. The Angel family lived in Holon and was travelling from Lod to Tel Aviv.
Police are trying to determine why their vehicle went out of control and skidded. There was no rain and no obstacles on the road. Police said the pick-up carrying three adults and seven children may have been overloaded.
