Sixteen Jews are among the candidates elected to South African Provincial Councils in last Wednesday’s elections, according to final tabulations completed today.
All 16 are members of the United Party, the group which forms the opposition to Premier Malan’s Nationalist Party. Twelve of the Jews were elected to the Council from the Province of Transvaal, making up more than half of the United Party’s opposition group totalling 23; four more Jews were elected to the Council in the Cape Province.
One Jew who ran on the pro-Malan Nationalist ticket here, and met defeat, is C.M. Zeff. The constituency for which Mr. Zeff ran has been represented in the Provincial Council for 11 years by another Jew, Laborite Richard Feldman, a leading figure in Jewish community affairs here. A United Party candidate defeated both Feldman and Zeff.
