Barney Hyman’s New Utrecht High School track team is slated as sure-fire winners of the 1935 National Interscholastic championships which will be held at the Garden….The Varsity walkers of the Ninety-second street “Y” are aiming for their eighth Coney Island race team victory to be held on Thanksgiving day…. The Red Wolfe all-stars, an all-Jewish combination, will meet the Renaissance, world’s colored basketball champions, on Thanksgiving eve….The entire proceeds will go to the Community Boys Club….
SCHOOL RIVALRY HOT
The Golden Tornado at Madison High, coached by Milt Torgan, seems well on its way to the city championship. Only one obstacle remains to be bowled over for the scholastic title and it means everything for the Madison lads to come through.
Roosevelt, on the other hand, coached by Babe Scheuer, former bulwark of the N.Y.U. line for three years and all-state quarterback in 1929 when he led his Madison team to a state-championship, has swept the Bronx and Manhattan schools and has but Madison left to make a clean sweep for the season.
Scheuer knows the type of team that his former coach can produce and he has warned his boys about it. His Lou Little attitude is only the result of his first year’s coaching experience. “Our regulars are in poor shape after that Washington scrap and this fellow Glickman will run us ragged if we’re not careful,” he told us yesterday.
Torgan has all the respect in the world for his former pupil’s charges, but he is quite confident of winning.
SCHEUER COACHING GRATIS
Babe has promised to help Frank Tubridy along with his football team at Roosevelt. Soon after that Frank was transferred and Tom Elliffe was given the job. Elliffe graciously gave Scheuer free rein and though the material is Tubridy’s the team plays a brand new type of football. “Open up the game,” is the Babe’s credo and Roosevelt has passed its way to five successive and striking victories. He has added lateral-forwards, reverses growing into aerials and ambitious running plays, in addition to new blocking technique—and Roosevelt has proved itself a juggernaut this season.
Scheuer played with the Giants, Dodgers and New Rochelle Bulldogs this year when-a dislocated elbow forced him into early season retirement. He devoted all his time to coaching at Roosevelt although he is not getting a penny for it.
We like Madison but Babe is a friend of ours and we’ll string along with Roosevelt.
A BULLETIN MACCABI CLUB
The sports department of the Jewish Daily Bulletin will, in the very near future, organize a Bulletin Maccabi club.
This department has for a long time been eager to form an athletic organization for Jewish men and women from the ages of sixteen up. And, because we are so heartily in back of the Maccabi movement this club will be known as the Bulletin Maccabi unit embodying all of the Maccabi’s aims, ideals, and programs. At the same time there will be an independent program developed too. Watch these columns for further announcements. Meanwhile any young man or woman interested in this athletic club should write this department for further information.
OUR ALL-AMERICA TEAM
The first two Jewish All-American football teams for the 1934 season will be announced in these columns tomorrow. We shall name our first eleven men and give our reasons for the choice. At the same time we shall name the man whom we think would be the best possible coach for this team. On Wednesday we shall announce our Jewish All-Metropolitan elevens and on Friday the Jewish All-Scholastics.
A first and second team shall be picked for all three divisions.
