Harry Dublinsky, the slashing Jewish welterweight from Chicago, is convinced that Jimmy McLarnin will help him win the 147-pound championship of the world. Dublinsky visited McLarnin at Jimmy’s training camp in Orange-burgh the other day, and along with your sports scribe watched “Baby Face” plow through a couple of sparring sessions in which he set his two opponents on their heels. At the conclusion of the settos, Dublinsky, in answer to one of our queries, declared that he was convinced that McLarnin will regain the welterweight title when he fights Barney Ross a week or so after he tackles Tony Canzoneri at Ebbets Field. And Harry is scheduled to trade blows with the flashy Italian tonight.

“McLarnin will win,” said Harry, “but he won’t have the title very long. He’s just the kind of fighter that ought to beat Ross, and he’s just the kind of fighter I would like to get in the ring with me. He’s absolutely no infighter. In close, he loses his effectiveness. I’m sure that I’ll get a match with him, and I’m just as sure that I’ll win.”

Well, at any rate, we’ve got to hand it to the Chicago slasher for cockiness and confidence.

Despite the fact that the betting fraternity along gamblers’ row is beginning to string along with Dublinsky as a result of the brilliant workouts he has shown at Stillman’s gymnasium the ante has been raised by the latest sucker quotations. As we get the story, it was only yesterday that Tony was a six-to-five favorite but when Dublinsky’s backers attempted to bet at those odds, the prices shortened to even money.

AND STILL WE PICK TONY CANZONERI TO WIN

However, this corner is consistent. Last week, before the fight was called off we figured Tony to be a better man than his Jewish opponent. Moreover, a week’s delay hasn’t made us change our mind. The way your sports scribe looks at this fracas the odds are all with the Italian. Canzoneri is a better fighter, much smarter, faster, and what makes for the final pay-off in the ring business—has a punch that may rock the Milwaukee Mauler and the Chi Slasher back to the sticks where he belongs. Dublinsky doesn’t rate top-notch recognition but if he did we’d be the first to pull west. Harry is a fine youngster for this Jewish lad from Midwest and a coming fighter but we don’t deem it wise managerial policy to offer a tyro into the fists of such a ring technician as Tony Canzoneri.

Regardless of the fact that Tony is fighting his first fight tonight as a welterweight his experience and finesse should see him through. And, as for the boys along Betting Lane getting the odds down to even money—take another squint at the facts, and you’ll see that the Italian’s backers are making the odds themselves and getting their results regardless of anything so fantastic as Dublinsky backers.

AL WEILL—THE OLD RELIABLE

Al Weill, the maestro of the promoters, has long been famed from the Atlantic to the Coast as the man with the famous vest. Yet, despite the kibitzing that Al has stood for as a result of his sartorial stains, he is one of the best men in the promoting end of the fight business today.

The fans know this. They also know that a fight backed by Weill is sufficient return for any amount of dough that is plunked over the line. That’s why all roads in New York lead to Ebbets Field tonight. It’s another Al Weill show and two good men are on the card in the main event.

THE BASEBALL CONTEST

With approximately two weeks left in the “Greatest Jewish Baseball Contest,” this corner would like to say once again that the names of Phil Weintraub, Hank Greenberg, and Johnny Kling are still leading the list. The baseball rooters can’t be blamed as to their choice inasmuch as the reasons given for their selections are excellent.

With three pairs of tickets to the World Series games in New York being offered to the writers of the three best letters the replies in this contest already exceed the number of answers received by this department in the last contest Slants on Sports held.

And, according to the latest indications, your home town champions will play the lads from Detroit right in your own backyard. It’s all yours, folks, merely for the writing.

A SOCCER MERGER

One of the pet schemes of this corner is a merger of two units that would bring out the best qualities of the two. Therefore, it is with great relish and gusto that we greet the plan of the Hakoahs and the Jordan Soccer clubs.

These two outfits, the best amateur soccer clubs in the city boasting of all Jewish talent, have combined into the Hakoah Athletic Club of Greater New York. Both organizations have been playing in the German-American Soccer League for many years but in the lower strata. Now they are trying to gain an entry into the Liga Division of the German American League inasmuch as the Liga chapter represents the best brand of soccer in the East.

However, there are three teams besides this new organization that have been seeking entrance into the Liga Division. The final upshot of this matter will be known Sunday afternoon when the new Hakoah A.C. of greater New York tackles the Stamford A.C. in a neutral field in the Bronx. The winner of this widely heralded football game will be the new member of the Liga division.

Some of the players who were members of the crack “A” division team formerly known as the Hakoah A.C. who will see action this Sunday are Max Sholom, Max Slone, the Liss boys, and Max Ruback. The latter is a soccer star who began a stellar career on the continent.

From the Jordans, a team that has been playing one of the best brands of football in the East, come Jack Nagler, another Viennese performer. He rates as one of the best technicians in the game today. Then again there will be Chester Marks, Sid Breitbard, Kid Liss and Abe Roth.

This new organization should take the Stamford eleven into camp this weekend and gain a brilliant entry into the Liga division of the German-American League.
