President Antonas Smetona declared today that Lithuania had gone to the limit of her restricted ability to fulfill her humanitarian duty of helping the Jews, but great states should do more. He received M. Goldberg, leader of the Jewish War Veterans Union, in connection with the union’s anniversary.
The general world situation has created complications for Jews which it is humanity’s duty to solve, President Smetona said. Later, when Jewish veterans paraded before the presidential palace, he spoke from the balcony, stressing the part Jews had played in fighting for Lithuania’s independence. Leaders of war veterans spoke in Lithuanian and Yiddish on a special program broadcast by the Government radio station.
