The deportation order against Boris Smolar, chief European correspondent of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, was postponed indefinitely today following a conference of Gestapo officials with American Consul General Douglas Jenkins and Vice-Consul Raymond Geist. The order, originally scheduled to be carried out Sunday, had been deferred until Thursday after intervention by the American Consulate General.
The officials asserted they could not rescind the expulsion edict entirely since they did not have the dossier of the Smolar case before them. They expressed a willingness, however, to reexamine the case and decide within the next fortnight whether the order could be cancelled.
Negotiations looking toward cancellation will be resumed by the consulate with the Gestapo next week. In the meantime, Smolar will be permitted to leave Germany and return at any time.
