Dr. James B. Conant today tucked away among his mementoes a gold medal awarded to him for his refusal of an offer of a Harvard scholarship from Dr. Ernst F. S. Hanfstaengl, Hitler aide and Harvard graduate.
President Conant’s rejection of the offer was recognized by the Ford Hall Forum last night with these words:
“His sterling character, scientific attainments and high position gave added weight to his recent decisive declaration in support of academic freedom— a timely utterance that made us all his debtors.”
