British Chief Rabbi Israel Brodie and Bishop A. Reeves of this city last night night addressed a well-attended meeting for Christians and Jews held under the auspices of the South African Board of Jewish Deputies. Christian ministers of all denominations as well as rabbis from this city participated in the meeting which was presided over by Bernard Ettlinger, president of the Board.
Bishop Reeves told the gathering that Christian denominations should cooperate more than they did in resolution of social and cultural problems to “provide a broader basis for Christian cooperation with non-Christians.” Asserting that he had Jewish groups in mind, the Bishop added: “The fundamental Biblical law affords a wide basis for cooperation between Christian and Jew.” Rabbi Brodie drew attention to the common basis of both the Jewish and Christian cultures of today.
The unity displayed in American Jewish communal life was praised at a press conference here today by Dr. Moses C. Weiler, leader of the South African Reform hovement, upon his return to this country following a two-month tour of the United States, Britain and France.
Because of the vastness of the country and the number of Jewish communities in the United States, it is not possible for one overall body to speak for American Jewry, Rabbi Weiler said, adding that there is community cooperation on major issues. He reported evidence of a rapprochement among the Reform, Conservative and Reconstructionist movements in the U.S.
