The elevation of Simon Kuper to the bench of the South African Supreme Court is an indication that the “government recognizes that devotion to Jewish causes is completely compatible with service to South Africa and in no way disqualifies anyone from the highest office in the land.” Gustav Saron, general secretary of the South African Jewish Board of Deputies, declared today at a function honoring Judge Kuper.
The reception, tendered during the Transvaal provincial conference of the Board of Deputies, featured the presentation by Mr. Saron to Judge Kuper of a scroll containing the organization’s tribute to Judge Kuper, who served as chairman of the Board of Deputies during what were described as the “anxious years following world war II,” Among his other communal services were chairmanship of the South African Zionist Federation and synagogue leadership.
