Hope that the South African Government would soon restore a special concession for the transfer of gift funds to Israel was expressed in a resolution adopted today at the closing session of the biennial Congress of the South African Jewish Board of Deputies.
In another resolution, the delegates affirmed South African Jewry’s religious and cultural ties with Israel, expressed appreciation for the past goodwill between South Africa and Israel, and noted with regret recent differences between the two countries.
This was a reference to the displeasure of the South African Government over Israel’s vote against South Africa in the UN General Assembly last year on the issue of apartheid. The South African Government withdrew the concessions on gift transfers after the UN vote.
Other resolutions stressed the need for closer communal coordination, particularly in fund-raising, and approved continuation of the board’s adult education program and its youth and student activities.
The delegates re-elected Namie Philips as president and chose Max Greenstein as treasurer. They also re-elected all members of the outgoing executive. The chairman of the board is to be elected at the first meeting of the executive, which is expected to re-elect Dr. Teddy Schneider.
