An emergency country-wide fund-raising effort to assist Israel at this time of crisis was opened here last night at a meeting of the South African Zionist Council, which was attended by delegates from the chief centers of the Union of South Africa and Rhodesia.
The council immediately established a fund, to which substantial contributions were made then and there by some delegates, and called on every Jew in the country to “give unstintingly and on a scale commensurate with the emergency of the hour.” I.A.Maisels, president of the South African Jewish Board of Deputies, pledged the support of his organization.
A resolution adopted by the council noted that “events in the Middle East have created a grave emergency which threatens the very existence of the State and people of Israel. Conscious of the gravity of the crisis, this meeting of the South African Zionist Council, expressing the will of the entire Jewish community of South Africa pledges full and unwavering support to our brethren in Israel.”
