All assets in Ashkelon held by a group of South African Jews, were handed over to the Israel Government yesterday at a special ceremony attended by Foreign Minister Golda Meir and other Government officials, hundreds of South African tourists and thousands of citizens of the southern coastal city built by South African Jaws.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mrs. Meir suggested that, after the Phenomenal success of the Ashkelon project, the Jews of South Africa should another project similar to Ashkelon but much further south in the Negev, She paid tribute to the South African Government which released funds and goods necessary to build Ashkeloa. Israel’s relations with South Africa had always been excellent, Mrs. Meir added. The Foreign Minister noted that Ashkelon represented a marvelous example of unity between Israel and the Diaspora.
