The American Jewish Committee today reported that its offices in Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and Buenos Aires indicate that there is full cooperation among Catholic prelates of South America in behalf of the adoption of the decrees on Catholic-Jewish relations and freedom of conscience at the third session of the Ecumenical Council to start in Rome next September,

Interviews with the cardinals and other prelates in South American countries have revealed “quite frank and outspoken statements relative to the horrible effects of prejudice, ” the American Jewish Committee reported, adding that “there is eagerness to do everything possible to assure the adoption of the schema on Jews.” It also reported that prominent South American Catholic laymen have offered to be of assistance in working for the adoption of the schema on Jews and freedom of conscience.
