Isidore Sobeloff, former executive vice-president of the Detroit Jewish Welfare Federation, has assumed the position of executive director of the Jewish Federation-Council of Greater Los Angeles, it was announced here today by Dr. Max W. Bay, president of the JFC.
The Federation-Council here is the organized Jewish community’s central planning, budgeting and fund-raising resource. Twenty-nine local social welfare agencies, and 492 affiliated institutions are members, and serve a Jewish population estimated in excess of 425,000, the second largest in the Western Hemisphere.
Mr. Sobeloff, considered the dean of American executives in Jewish welfare field, joined the Detroit Federation in 1937 as executive director, and served in that capacity until 1955, when he became executive vice-president. A former president of the National Conference of Jewish Communal Service, he has held numerous other positions in the field of Jewish community organization in the United States and abroad. He is a frequent contributor to social work literature.
Among the national agency boards on which he has served are the Council of Jewish Federations and Welfare Funds, National Jewish Welfare Board. Joint Distribution Committee, National Foundation for Jewish Culture, and the Jewish Telegraphic Agency.
