A statement expressing faith in British justice in connection with the Stavsky verdict in Jerusalem was issued by the Central Committee of the United Jewish Socialist Workers’ Party, the Poale Zion-Zoire Zion, Friday.
“Our standpoint,” the statement said in part, “has been and still is today that nothing could serve so well to clear the atmosphere in our political life as the truth, even though it be cruel and fearfully difficult to bear. We hoped all the time that the investigations would prove the suspicions unfounded and that none of the accused would be found guilty of murder. The foundations of British judicial institutions and the opportunities which the defense had for producing its evidence leaves us no ground for doubt as to the impartiality and legal regularity of the conduct of the trial.”
A cablegram sent Friday to Colonel Josiah Wedgwood, M.P., by Jacob De Haas, chairman of the Stavsky Defense Committee, read as follows:
“Appreciate your action re Stavsky. Please make it very clear we believe him innocent. Want fair trial and would regard commutation of sentence as desperate act leaving his position unchanged and forcing continuance of undesirable agitation.”
