A Society for the Advancement of Jewish Liturgical Music was founded at a meeting in the Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue in New York, Rabbi D.A. Jessurun Cardozo of the Congregation Mikveh Israel here and president of the new society, announced today.
The society was founded to develop and improve musical standards in the field of Jewish liturgical music, Rabbi Cardozo said. The group hopes to publish its own magazine and will promote other scholarly publications and discussions as well as lists of available synagogue music. It will also encourage the composition and performance of such music.
