After memorial rites on Pier F., Jersey City, the Excambion sailed today, bearing the body of Solomon Lamport, New York merchant, philanthropist and Zionist leader, for burial on the Mount of Olives, Jerusalem, in fulfillment of the wish expressed in his will.
Mr. Lamport’s daughter, Mrs. Ezra Shapiro, of Cleveland, and her husband were passengers on the steamer. The widow sailed on the Normandie June 2 to arrange for the burial, scheduled for June 27. Mr. Lamport will be buried beside his father and grandfather. Representatives of official Jewish groups in Palestine will attend the services.
Zionist leaders, scholars and educators participated in the services in Jersey City today. The speakers list included Dr. Stephen S. Wise, Rabbi Israel Goldstein, Rabbi David de Sola Pool, Prof. Mordecai M.Kaplan, Dr. Nathan Ratnoff, Mrs. Edward Jacobs and Mrs. Alexander Lamport.
Mr. Lamport, who died at the age of 67 on Jan. 25, 1936, was the first American to purchase land in Palestine. He turned over land on Mount Scopus to the Jewish National Fund for the campus of the Hebrew University. In the United States he helped foster study of the Hebrew language and founded the Herzliah Hebrew High School in New York.
