Rabbi Maurice N. Eisendrath, president of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, was among the close to 1,000 rabbis, priests and ministers who arrived here today to mobilize congressional support to end the war in Indo-China. The “Emergency Religious Convocation” was sponsored by 60 religious leaders, including Rabbi Eisendrath, who have been prominent in the anti-war movement. In a joint statement, the religious leaders declared that “no further military expenditures should be authorized nor appropriations voted without clear and definite provisions for the termination of U.S. military operations in Southeast Asia.” They also called for a definite deadline for U.S. withdrawal from the area. The religious leaders conducted a “silent vigil” on the steps of the Capital to dramatize their “witness for peace” visited Congressmen and Senators.
