The Soncino Press of London today announced here the publication of a new 18-volume edition of the English translation of the Babylonian Talmud. The announcement was made by S. M. Bloch, managing director of Soncino, who arrived in this country to introduce the new edition. He said that the first four volumes would be available in the United States next Sunday.
“We are presenting this new edition of the Talmud, ” Mr. Bloch said, “at a time when the world thirsts for traditional values; when present-day members of the Jewish faith need to know and understand the basic philosophies of their forefathers. It is our modest hope that by scrupulously translating this revered repository of Hebraic knowledge and ideas into the language so many know best, we will help fill this void. “
Soncino’s original English translation of the Talmud, published in 1932, required 35 volumes. However, modern typography and the use of a special white India paper, compact but sufficiently opaque to permit facile reading, has made possible the publication of the complete Talmud in 18 volumes, without a single omission, ” Mr. Bloch stated.
