Men and women leaders in all walks of life joined in a testimonial dinner to Sophie Irene Loeb of the New York Evening World, at the Hotel Biltmore Monday night to honor her for her unflagging interest in poor children and for her work as Director of the Bureau of Child Welfare, an office she occupies without pay.
Testimonials and telegrams of congratulation from all over the country poured in on Miss Loeb, while speakers of the evening, including Miss Margaret Woodrow Wilson, United States Senator Royal S. Copeland Gov. Alfred E. Smith, praised her in her presence.
President Collidge and former President Wilson sent messages, expressing the hope that the welfare work Miss Loeb was directing so ably would be extended to every State.
“Miss Loeb has said less and accomplished more than any other woman in the world.” Representative Fiorello H. La Guardia said.
Mayor Hylan sent a congratulatory message from Atlantic City, where he is recuperating. Other telegrams came from Nathan and Oscar Straus, Otto H. Kahn, Mrs. Oliver Harriman and Police Commissioner Enright.
