600 Jewish families have been rendered homeless and destitute in Soroca by the recent floods there, says an appeal from the Soroca Jewish Community received here by the Federation of Jewish Relief Organisations. The Jewish Community is declared to be totally ruined, and the relief received from the neighbouring poor townships is barely sufficient to keep the stricken population alive. Even this will not be forth-coming much longer, as the resources of the contributing towns are inadequate to bear the continual drain. A large sum is required to make good some of the damage suffered by the Jewish community, amounting to 27 million lei. The destitute population needs to be fed, clothed and supported, the Federation states, and immediate action must be taken to rebuild such of the houses as have not been entirely destroyed, and the workshops upon which the community was dependent.
The London Federation has made an immediate grant of £50, and has asked the Foreign Appeals Committee of the Board of Deputies also to make a contribution.
