De jure recognition of the Provisional Government of Israel by South Africa cannot be “envisaged before the Palestine problem is definitely settled,” Daniel F. Malan, Premier of the Union, declared in a statement issued here yesterday.
He defined his government’s attitude toward the Palestine war as “one of strict neutrality and the desire to live on friendly terms with both of these ancient races.” He asserted that he does not believe that Jewish and Arab interests are irreconcilable and that the South African Government is anxious for a peace settlement which will restore relations of goodwill and friendship between the belligerents. Malan also said that the South African delegation at the U.N. was striving for just such a settlement.
