Declaring South Africa would be “immeasurably poorer” without the Jews, J.H. Hofmeyr, Minister of Education and Social Welfare, warned in an address before the first annual meeting of the Society of Jews and Christians that “anti-Semitic propaganda is the precursor of dictatorship.”

“Our honor, our safety as a democratic people demand that we should oppose this evil growth of anti-Semitic, Mr. Hofmeyr asserted. “It is not by stimulating hostility against a section of the people, but by welcoming the contribution which all sections of the community can bring that a nation is built.”
