Flags on all government buildings in Praetoria flew at half-mast yesterday as the Government of South Africa observed a national day of mourning from Israel President Weizmann.
Synagogues in Johannesburg and Capetown were crowded with Jews and representatives of local and national governments as the Jewish community held religious services in memory of Dr. Weizmann. All Jewish public functions were cancelled for the day and Jewish shopkeepers closed their stores during the hours that the Weizmann funeral was held in Israel.
On Monday South African Premier Daniel F. Malan had cabled Acting President of Israel Joseph Sprinzak that his government regretted the “grievous loss” suffered by the people of Israel in the death of Dr. Weizmann.
