A nation-wide congress of the South Africa Jewish Board of Deputies was opened during the week-end with welcoming address by the mayor of this city and other celebrities. A message was received from Field ##rshal Jan Christian Smuts, Premier.
The conference adopted a resolution expressing a “profound sense of horror and ##ulsion” at the hanging of two British sergeants in Palestine and pledged its support to the Palestine Jewish community in the struggle to rid itself of extremist elements. Mayor James Gray, who also condemned the “executions,” paid tribute to the contributions of the Jews toward the progress of Johannesburg and South Africa.Smuts’ message expressed the hope that peace would be restored to Palestine and ## rest of the world before the deputies’ next congress. He urged the South African ## to place themselves in the forefront of all great movements affecting the Jews ## the world.
