Jewish life in South Africa was described here at a press conference for the first time by a South African Jewish leader, Mr. Abel Shaban, who is now visiting Argentina in behalf of the ORT.
Mr. Shaban, a well-known industralist, revealed that during the war for Israel’s independence, his airplanes carried 400 Jewish youths from South Africa who volunteered in 1948 to fight in the ranks of the Haganah. A member of the world executive of ORT, Mr. Shaban came to Buenos Aires to negotiate this year’s allocation for the ORT from the United Jewish Campaign here.
