A dispute concerning the colonization work feature in the relief of Russian Jews has been going on between the two leading sections of the Jewish community of South Africa.
Members of the South African Jewish Relief Fund, who withdrew when the annual conference held here in March rejected the resolution that the Fund should be devoted to assisting the Jewish colonization movement in Russia, decided at a meeting held in the Doornfontein section of Johannesburg to establish a branch of the Jewish Colonization Fund to assist in settling Jews on the land in Russia.
Mr. E. Rendel said that the first branch of the Jewish Relief Fund, eleven years ago, was established in Doornfontein. He criticized the Jewish Relief Fund Conference and the attitude towards the movement of Russian colonization that, he said, was being taken up by Zionists in this country.
The Chairman. Mr. I. M. Isaacson, said that he could not understand why a certain section of Zionists were opposed to the movement, especially as it would provide a grand training for Chaluzim, and Russia was a country that provides most of the Jewish emigrants to Palestine.
Dr. W. Sachs spoke against the colonization plan.
A resolution to support the land colonization scheme was adopted, as well as a resolution deciding to form a Doornfontein branch to make monthly collections for this purpose. A committee of twenty was elected, most of whom were formerly members of the Relief Fund.
A donation of £100 from Messrs. Schneier and London was announced.
