The “unstable situation” in the Republic of South Africa presents a serious threat not only to the white population there in general but to the South African Jewish community as well, the American Jewish Committee’s foreign affairs committee was told here today. The caution was voiced by Frank G. Binswanger, of Philadelphia, who reported on a three-month tour of the African continent at the AJC’s Institute of Human Relations here. “The Jewish community” in South Africa, he warned, “may be among the first victims of any severe upheaval in that country.”
Mr. Binswanger also reported that, in West Africa, he was “greatly impressed” with “the standing and efficiency of Israel’s work” and with the quality of Israel’s representatives there. “One reason for this high standing of Israel’s representatives in West Africa is that they can get things done quickly at home,” he said. “Israel’s aid and technological assistance, which involve no political strings or demands on the African nations, are highly welcomed by them. If an African nation wants a project undertaken or goods delivered, the matter is taken care of quickly without red tape. Naturally, this impresses the Africans.”
