South African Minister’s Threat to Awaken Anti-jewish Hatred Rouses Resentment Among Jewish Populati

The threat made in Cape Town by Dr. F. D. Malan, the South African Minister of the Interior (given in yesterday’s J.T.A. Bulletin, that if the Jews of the country do not stop opposing the Immigration Quota Restriction Act the Nationalist Party will hit back at them by awakening anti-Jewish hatred in South Africa, has roused deep resentment among all sections of the Jewish population.

Advocate Morris Alexander, K.C., one of the leading Jewish communal workers in the country, a prominent figure in the South African Jewish Board of Deputies and former member of Parliament, who is now standing for the vacancy created by the recent death of Deputy Buirski, one of the Jewish members of the House, said to the J.T.A. representative here to-day, that as a people who belong as such to no political party, the Jews resent the threat directed against them by Dr. Malan. The Jews are free citizens in a free country, he declared, and they are entitled to express their opinion freely and to vote freely. The Jews, he pointed out, are just as much interested as are other South Africans in keeping undesirables out of the country.
