The Nationalist Party of South Africa began softpedalling its anti-Semitic propaganda as early as the end of 1947 and has since dropped the entire line, B.A. Etlinger, president of the South African Jewish Board of Deputies, declared here last night at a meeting of the Board of Deputies of British Jews.
“The Nationalists have done nothing about which we, as Jews, can complain,” he asserted, adding that Nationalist Premier Daniel F. Malan never was an anti-Semite. The Premier, he reported, called in Jewish leaders after his election to office and said that there would be no discrimination “among Europeans.” Mr. Etlinger, however, stressed that the Jews must be watchful, particularly in the event of the development of an economic crisis in South Africa.
