South African President Thabo Mbeki told the country’s Jewish umbrella organization that the South African Jewish community is an “invaluable resource” to the country. Mbeki, who wore a blue velvet yarmulka given to him for the occasion, made his comments to an audience of 1,100 at Saturday evening’s opening of the biennial congress of the South African Jewish Board of Deputies in Johannesburg.
