South African Prime Minister Dr. Daniel F. Malan today granted an audience to Dr. Henry Shoskes, overseas director of HIAS, who is now visiting this country. The hour-long interview, which took place at the capital, Pretoria, was described by Dr. Shoskes as being of “an extremely cordial nature.”
During an explanation of the Union’s immigration policy, Prime Minister Malan declared that this “careful selection program” has reduced the number of immigrants entering South Africa but that no distinction is made between prospective immigrants on the basis of race or creed. He said that the major aim of the immigration policy is to ensure that immigrants do not become competitors of South Africans in the labor market.
