A selection committee to find a successor to Rabbi Moses C. Weiler as spiritual leader of the United Progressive Jewish Congregation of South Africa, is negotiating with “world leaders of our movement in London, New York and Cincinnati,” Phil Berman, Congregation president, announced today.
Rabbi Weiler, founder of the South African Progressive Judaism movement, resigned despite repeated appeals from the Congregation, Mr. Berman said. He added that Rabbi Weiler decided “to abide by his decision because he feels he has fulfilled the mission and mandate for which he was sent to South Africa by the World Union for Progressive Judaism.”
The resignation of Rabbi Weiler, who is a member of the selection committee, be comes effective in December. The rabbi has not announced plans for the future.
