Professor Rudolph Samoilowitsch, the “Admiral Byrd of Soviet Russia,” was appointed today to head a new faculty for Polar Sciences established at the University of Leningrad.
Professor Samoilowitsch, son of an orthodox Jewish family in Russia, was commander of the Soviet ice – breaker Krassin which rescued the Italian Nobile expedition to the North Pole in 1928. He has conducted about 200 scientific expeditions to the North Pole since 1917
