A first meeting of Israeli and Soviet delegations was held here today on Soviet claims to properties in Israel dating back to the Czarist period in Russia.
The properties involved belonged to the Czarist Orthodox Palestine Society and the late Archduke Sergei. The Soviets want Israeli recognition of the present Soviet regime as the inheritors of rights to the properties.
The first meeting was devoted to setting up rules of procedure. The Soviets submitted a list of the properties they want to discuss. Israel will submit a list on the location and possible value of the properties within a few days. After both sides have studied the two lists, a second meeting will be held.
The principal talks will center on reaching an understanding concerning the “Russian compound” in the center of Jerusalem, in which the Israel Supreme Court building and police headquarters building are located.
