Soviet authorities have warned Jews in the Soviet Union against assembly in private homes for Rosh Hashanah prayers, according to reports reaching the Israel Rabbinate and World Jewish Congress office here today.
Unlike prior years, when private minyanim were permitted, it was reported that a warning was issued against such prayer assemblies in homes. Letters arriving in Israel also reported an intensification of the anti-Jewish religious campaign of Soviet authorities.
(A special radio with prayers marking the beginning of the Jewish New Year was broadcast to the Jews in the Soviet Union this evening by Radio Liberty, a non-governmental net work beaming broadcasts directly to Soviet listeners from ultra-powerful transmitters located in West Germany.)
