Soviet authorities have closed down the last two Jewish schools in the U.S.S.R., according to reliable information reaching Jewish educational groups here, it was revealed today.
The two schools were operated in Vilna and Kovno. They functioned normally until the end of the 1949 school year. However, they did not reopen for the new term, and the pupils were assigned to Lithuanian schools where all subjects are taught in Lithuanian, the report received here said. No other Jewish schools have been in operation in the U.S.S.R. — not even in Birobidjan — for the past two years, the report added.
