Soviet Delegate Charges Israel Pursues Policies ‘similar to Nazism’ in Occupied Territories

Nikolai Tarassov, the Soviet Union delegate to the United Nations Economic and Social Council, denounced yesterday the government of Israel for pursuing policies “similar to Nazism” in the occupied territories. Speaking at the Council’s Social Committee, meeting to discuss the question of human rights, Mr. Tarassov said the Human Rights Commission’s resolution concerning rights in the occupied territories should be adopted by the Council and should also be submitted to the General Assembly. Mr. Tarassov said the Commission’s resolution.had taken note of what he termed certain concrete facts about alleged Israeli violations of the fourth Geneva Convention and of what he termed relevant UN decisions. The Soviet delegate said that the task before the UN, including ECOSOC, is to force Israel to implement provisions of the Geneva Convention relative to the “Protection of Civilian Population in Time of War.” He also said the Commission’s resolution concerning the question of punishment of war criminals was of paramount importance “because some states did not fulfill UN decisions regarding war crimes and crimes against humanity.” He identified the two nations committing such alleged crimes as the United States, in Vietnam and Indo-China, and “the Israel military forces against the civilian Arab population.”
