Mr. Mashansky, an assistant at the Institute of Traumatology at Leningrad, has cured a victim of “sleeping sickness” by an operation upon the spinal cord. The surgeon succeeded in halting the constant trembling of the patient’s hands and legs, a symptom characterizing the disease, by severing those nerves which transmit pain sensations from the spinal cord to the muscles of the legs.
