“In view of the recent world developments and the new anti-Semitic campaign in countries behind the Iron Curtain, the economic consolidation of Israel becomes a more urgent necessity than ever before,” Dr. Dov Joseph, Israel Minister of State, declared here today upon his arrival in the United States. Dr. Joseph arrived in this country to participate in the National Leadership Conference for Israel Bonds which will be held in Washington this week-end.
In his statement, Dr. Joseph emphasized the fact that Israel requires a stepping up of the influx of investment capital to complete the absorption of more than 700,000 newcomers who have entered since the State of Israel was established. “It is for this reason,” he pointed out, “that the people of Israel hope that the sale of Israel Bonds in the United States will go forward with all possible dispatch and effectiveness.”
The National Leadership Conference in Washington, which will inaugurate the 1953 campaign for State of Israel Bonds, will be devoted to the mobilization of American support for Israel’s economic development to meet the challenge of growing anti-Semitism in Russia and other countries of Eastern Europe. In addition to Dr. Joseph, the conference will have the following American and Israel leader among the principal speakers: Senators Robert A. Taft and Herbert H. Lehman; Israel Ambassador Abba Eban; Theodor Kollek, Director-General of the Prime Minister’s Office in Jerusalem, and others.
The conference will have the following objectives: 1. To mobilize Americans in defense of Israel; 2. To evaluate Israel’s economic progress during 1952 and its needs for 1953; 3. To launch the 1953 Israel Bond campaign and to call to the attention of American communities the urgent necessity of sustaining the economy of Israel during 1953.
