The Soviet Embassy here, for the first time, has accepted a petition on behalf of a Jewish prisoner in the USSR. The petition, asking freedom for Silva Zalmanson, who is serving a ten-year sentence, was brought to the Embassy yesterday on the fourth anniversary of the first Leningrad hijack trial by a delegation of Jewish women. It was accepted in a friendly atmosphere, according to Sergio Nudelstejer, secretary general of the Central Jewish Committee and the Committee for Soviet Jews.
Nudelstejer said the petition had been prepared by the Conference of Latin American Women for Soviet Jews held in San Jose, Costa Rica in which Mrs. Karen Figures, wife of former President Jose Figueres participated.
