Soviet Foreign Minister Dmitri Shepilov was reported today to have expressed himself in favor of freedom of passage through the Suez Canal for Israeli shipping and cargo.
According to reports here, French Foreign Minister Christian Pineau, a luncheon guest yesterday of Mr. Shepilov, asked whether the Soviet statesman thought the principle of freedom of navigation through the canal without discrimination meant that Egypt could not interfere with Israeli shipping. Mr. Shepilov is said to have replied: “Certainly. This is a principle that must be applied in all its force.”
